The Washington Wizards will no longer have the services of their rookie, Bilal Coulibaly, for the remainder of the season due to a right wrist fracture sustained in a recent game against the Chicago Bulls. Coulibaly’s rookie year showed promise before his injury, but unfortunately, he will miss the final 14 games of the season. Despite this setback, there’s enough footage to evaluate his first season in the NBA.

The incident that led to Coulibaly’s season-ending injury occurred during a fast break situation against the Bulls. Coulibaly had a clear path to the basket, but an attempt to block his shot by Bulls forward DeMar DeRozan resulted in an awkward fall, causing the injury. It’s argued that DeRozan’s attempt to contest the shot excessively was unnecessary since Coulibaly was already well-positioned for a score.

Assessing Coulibaly’s rookie season, there were positives and negatives. As a first-round pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Coulibaly played in 63 games, starting 15, and showcased an average of 8.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game, with respectable shooting percentages. He demonstrated defensive aggressiveness and offensive potential, earning him a spot in the Rising Stars Challenge during All-Star Weekend.

One notable highlight was Coulibaly’s impressive recovery block against GG Jackson of the Memphis Grizzlies, showcasing his determination and defensive capabilities. However, his shooting consistency, particularly in the latter part of the season, was a concern. Coulibaly’s shooting percentages dropped significantly after the turn of the year, impacting his ability to space the floor effectively.

To reach his full potential as an elite wing player, Coulibaly needs to refine his shooting mechanics and improve his free throw accuracy. Despite these areas for growth, his overall rookie season warrants a solid B grade. Coulibaly, at 19 years old, has ample time for development, drawing comparisons to the early career trajectory of NBA star Giannis Antetokounmpo, who also faced challenges in his rookie season before realizing his full potential through hard work and dedication. Washington should anticipate significant improvements from Coulibaly in the coming seasons.
