The New York Jets faced a pressing need to revamp their offensive line due to poor performance metrics in the previous season, including high pressure rates and low pass block win rates. Consequently, they allowed several key linemen to depart in free agency, namely Duane Brown, Laken Tomlinson, and Mekhi Becton.
To address these gaps, the Jets made significant roster changes, bringing in replacements such as Tyron Smith, John Simpson, and an unnamed tackle from the AFC North. Additionally, they executed a trade with the Ravens, acquiring Morgan Moses in exchange for draft picks.
Presently, the Jets’ starting offensive line features Tyron Smith at left tackle, John Simpson at left guard, Joe Tippmann at center, Alijah Vera-Tucker at right guard, and Morgan Moses at right tackle. However, they recognize the need for depth and a long-term solution, particularly at guard and tackle positions.
In preparation for the NFL Draft, the Jets held a visit with Troy Fautanu, a highly regarded offensive line prospect. Fautanu, who showcased versatility by primarily playing left tackle but also some experience at guard during his college career at Washington, is considered a top talent in the draft class.
Despite Fautanu’s strong performance at tackle in college, there’s uncertainty about his position in the NFL, with some scouts suggesting he may be better suited for guard due to his size. Fautanu himself refutes this notion, asserting his ability to excel at tackle and dismissing it as a “lazy narrative.”
While Fautanu prefers to play tackle, he’s open to adapting to any position as needed, even demonstrating proficiency at center during pro day workouts. Ultimately, his position in the NFL will be determined by the team that drafts him, but he remains confident in his abilities regardless of where he lines up on the field.
