The Houston Texans recently revealed their new uniform designs, featuring four distinct colors: white, dark blue, red, and a special “color rush” uniform in a different shade of dark blue. Many fans, particularly those nostalgic for the era of the Houston Oilers, had hoped for a light blue option. Surprisingly, the Texans themselves shared this sentiment, according to team owner Cal McNair.
However, their plans hit a roadblock when the Tennessee Titans, formerly the Oilers franchise, objected to the idea of light blue uniforms. Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk voiced strong opposition to the concept. Eventually, a compromise was reached, with the Texans incorporating light blue, dubbed “H-Town blue,” as trim on their “color rush” uniform. This compromise was perhaps the only disappointment regarding the Texans’ new attire.

Interestingly, light blue uniforms had already gained traction, notably among the University of Houston football team, who sported them in a previous season opener. This move also drew ire from Strunk, leading to a legal dispute. The NFL intervened with a cease-and-desist letter to the university, alleging intellectual property violations and demanding the discontinuation of merchandise sales and promotional activities featuring the blue imagery.
Despite the NFL’s objections, the University of Houston stood firm. Athletic director Chris Pezman expressed the university’s resolve to continue using the light blue uniforms across all sports. In response to the NFL’s demands, the university notified them of their intentions and awaited a response.
This defiance against the NFL’s heavy-handed tactics is commendable. The dispute over a mere uniform color, one that celebrates the city’s football heritage, seems trivial. Kudos to the University of Houston for standing up for what they believe in and asserting their right to use the light blue uniforms.
