Elly De La Cruz’s two-run blast and Christian Encarnacion-Strand’s standout performance at the plate propelled the Cincinnati Reds to an 8-1 triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday, halting the Phillies’ seven-game winning streak.
Adding to the Reds’ offensive display, Santiago Espinal contributed three hits, including a solo homer in the eighth inning, his first since July 29. Relief pitcher Fernando Cruz secured the win for the Reds after pitching for 2/3 of an inning.
The Phillies had been on a notable winning streak, one of their longest in April, but their last eight-game winning streak in April dated back to 1953. Bryce Harper missed the game but is expected to return from the paternity list on Thursday.
Phillies manager Rob Thomson acknowledged the challenge of the game, expressing disappointment with the outcome but a resolve to move forward.
Although the Phillies managed to score a run in the first inning, their offensive efforts were limited, resulting in only five hits, equaling their season low. Despite striking out eight batters, Phillies pitcher Christopher Sánchez struggled, lasting only three innings and conceding five runs, one of which was due to defensive errors.
Sánchez admitted his performance fell short of his expectations, attributing his early exit to a high pitch count.
In the fourth inning, Phillies center fielder Johan Rojas made a remarkable catch against the wall but required evaluation by the training staff afterward. Despite concerns, Rojas remained in the game.
