TAMAULIPAS, Mexico — Claudia González enjoyed a peaceful life in Houston alongside her husband and their son, working as a data entry clerk at an elementary school and attending church weekly. Yet, her undocumented immigration status lingered as a concern.
Having entered the U.S. illegally as a teenager to reunite with her mother, González lived without legal status for 15 years until she sought protection through the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program in 2018. However, this program only offers temporary relief from deportation, lacking a permanent solution.
Married to a U.S. citizen, González sought permanent residency through sponsorship but encountered a setback. Despite her efforts, she faced a 10-year ban from reentry into the U.S., leading her to return to her hometown in Mexico, near the Texas border.
