It’s been reported that pass rusher Danielle Hunter chose the Texans over the team offering the highest salary when he signed a free agent contract. According to Stephen Holder of ESPN, Hunter was reportedly promised more by the Colts than what he signed for with the Texans.
Hunter has a two-year, $49 million contract with the Texans, of which $48 million is guaranteed. It’s unclear how much more the Colts gave, or if Hunter was more drawn to the Texans’ offer because of things like the contract structure or the state of Texas’ exemption from state income tax.
If the compensation had been comparable, though, Hunter might have just decided to play in Houston.Hunter indicated after signing with the Texans that he valued having his friends and family nearby. Hunter was raised in the Houston region.
After signing, Hunter remarked, “It means a lot.” Being able to perform in front of my family and all the folks I grew up with is an honor. They’ve been quite thrilled about the news lately, I know that. They will at last be able to watch me play at a game.
In addition to hoping the Colts would regret passing on Hunter, the Texans are optimistic that Hunter will help them maintain their competitiveness in the AFC South.
