Looking ahead to the 2024 season, punter Austin McNamara and linebacker Aaron Casey are seen as potential additions to the roster, although their long-term potential may not be as high as two Division III players: Justin Blazek, a defensive end from Wisconsin-Platteville, and Cole Burgess, a wide receiver from SUNY Cortland.

Blazek and Burgess showcased impressive skills during their college careers, dominating their Division III competition and demonstrating exceptional athleticism during pro days. However, transitioning from Division III to the NFL presents a significant challenge, especially considering the Bengals’ depth at their respective positions.

Burgess, standing at 6 feet tall and weighing 200 pounds, had an outstanding final season in college, recording 87 catches for 1,375 yards and 16 touchdowns. Despite the Bengals’ crowded wide receiver room, Burgess may aim to secure a spot on the practice squad for the 2024 season, allowing him to gain experience and potentially contend for a roster spot in 2025.

On the other hand, Blazek, a 6-foot-5, 244-pound defender, amassed impressive statistics in college, with 118 tackles, 29 tackles for loss, and 17.5 sacks over his last two seasons. However, he faces tough competition in the Bengals’ defensive end group, with uncertain prospects even behind day 3 pick Cedric Johnson. Yet, with several key defensive ends becoming free agents in the coming years, Blazek could find opportunities to compete for a roster spot in 2025.

Both Blazek and Burgess face an uphill battle to make the Bengals’ roster in 2024 but could serve as valuable additions to the training camp. With exposure to an NFL strength program and experience against professional players, they have the chance to refine their skills and contend for roster spots in the future.
