In the upcoming 2024 season, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ quarterback lineup is undergoing a major transformation. Departing are Kenny Pickett, Mitch Trubisky, and Mason Rudolph, making way for the arrival of Russell Wilson and Justin Fields.
During the NFL league meetings held in Orlando, Coach Mike Tomlin shed light on the team’s quarterback situation, unequivocally designating Russell Wilson as the starter from the get-go.

“We’ve been completely transparent about our hierarchy, especially at the outset,” remarked Tomlin. “I believe it brings clarity to all parties involved. Russell is a seasoned veteran with a proven readiness process. With years of experience in the league, he possesses the ability to galvanize the team, be it receivers, tight ends, or running backs. His extensive experience throughout the year is invaluable. This provides a valuable learning opportunity for a younger talent like Justin, who can glean insights from Russell’s veteran approach. It sets the tone as they engage in informal activities during this period, such as offseason workouts. When it’s time to compete, Justin will have his chance to prove himself, and we’ll let the competition unfold naturally. However, for the initial phase, it’s fair to say Russell holds the lead position, given his track record. From my discussions with Justin, he’s eager to absorb wisdom from Russell and hone his skills behind someone who’s been a mainstay in the league for over a decade.”
While Russell Wilson assumes the “pole position,” there’s a possibility that Fields could emerge as the starter for Week 1. As the team gears up for spring and training camp, Wilson is entrusted with the starting role, but the door remains open for Fields to make his mark.
