The New York Jets’ decision to part ways with Zach Wilson may not be as simple as originally presumed.
Team owner Woody Johnson indicated during the NFL’s Annual League Meeting on Monday that they might retain the former No. 2 overall pick, stating, “If we don’t trade him, we’re going to keep him,” as reported by ESPN.
While the Jets allowed Wilson to explore trade options in February, it’s doubtful they’ll find a trading partner willing to accept his performance and significant guaranteed salary without the Jets absorbing a substantial portion of it.
Earlier in the offseason, Johnson criticized the team’s lack of a backup quarterback, indirectly referencing Wilson’s struggles when filling in for Aaron Rodgers. However, he expressed more empathy towards the young quarterback during Monday’s remarks, acknowledging the benefit Wilson would have had from observing a seasoned player’s performance last year.
Johnson stated, “I feel badly about Zach in some ways because last year it would’ve been a great… it would’ve been the first time he could just sit back and watch a master at work, and he’s never had that.”
With the signing of Tyrod Taylor as Rodgers’ backup for the 2024 season, there’s a possibility Wilson could serve as the third-string quarterback, providing him with a developmental opportunity. However, the likelihood remains that the Jets will eventually part ways with Wilson in some capacity, though the final decision rests with Johnson. If he chooses to retain the former No. 2 pick, it’s within his rights as the owner.
