LONDON (AP) – Derek Underwood, England’s most successful spin bowler in Test cricket history, has passed away at the age of 78.
The English county cricket team Kent confirmed Underwood’s passing on Monday, though no further details were provided.
Between 1966 and 1982, Underwood played in 86 Test matches for England and claimed 297 wickets using his left-arm spin. He also captured 32 wickets in One Day Internationals (ODIs).
Underwood spent his entire 24-year cricket career with Kent.
Kent’s chairman, Simon Phillip, commemorated Underwood as “one of its greatest ever players.”
Phillip added, “It was a privilege to see Derek perform his unique magic on damp pitches, an experience cherished by those who witnessed it. His inclusion in the ICC Hall of Fame underscores the high regard he commanded in international cricket.”
