Following a 132-122 defeat to the Boston Celtics, the Washington Wizards concluded their worst season in franchise history with a record of 15-67, marking a new low that surpassed their previous worst record by four games. Changes are anticipated this offseason.
General Manager Will Dawkins is in the process of rejuvenating the roster by focusing on younger talent, aligning with his strategic plan. After this season, the Wizards have secured a top-six position in the draft lottery and share the highest probability of landing the number one pick, a feat last achieved in 2010 when they picked John Wall.
As part of the rebuild, Dawkins aims to make room for new players by managing the roster, particularly as the team has several players approaching free agency or having contract options due this summer. Among them, three are likely to leave.
Tyus Jones, the most notable upcoming free agent, will likely depart after his two-year, $29 million contract ended this season. Over 66 games, Jones averaged 12 points and 7.3 assists while shooting a career-best 41.4 percent from three-point range. Although he proved his value as a starting point guard, a back injury sidelined him for the last 16 games, during which Jordan Poole excelled as his replacement. Poole’s impressive performance suggests he will be the new starting point guard.
Additionally, Jared Butler, initially on a two-way contract, has secured a three-year deal with the Wizards following strong performances in Jones’ absence, further indicating the team’s direction towards younger, emerging talent.
While Jones was effective offensively, the team’s defensive performance suffered with him on the court, which makes his departure a likely part of the Wizards’ strategy to enhance their defense.
