The Houston Texans, led by rookie quarterback CJ Stroud, have spent much of their offseason refining their defensive line after the offense pulled off an unexpected comeback in 2023.
It’s time to get inventive this offseason to squeeze every last bit of cap space out of your squad because all that effort on defense during free agency has eaten up a lot of space.
Field Yates of ESPN reports that Houston has restructured guard Shaq Mason’s deal, turning his base salary into a signing bonus and freeing up an additional $6.4 million in cap space. Houston is doing precisely that.
According to Spotrac, Houston presently has about $18 million in available cap space.

Though it’s unclear what they’ll do with the extra space, the move raises the possibility that the team missed a few opportunities this offseason because they didn’t have a bit more room to maneuver.
Houston allegedly just missed out on a trade involving Keenan Allen and showed significant interest in former 49ers defensive end Arik Armstead before to his signing with the Jaguars.
Mason’s restructuring didn’t free up much space, but it would be enough to pursue other DL or WR possibilities that are still available, such veteran receivers Odell Beckham Jr. and Hunter Renfrow, or they may look to sign Quandre Diggs to fill a safety need. After being traded from Tampa Bay last summer, Mason signed a three-year, $36 million agreement and started 17 games at guard in his first season blocking for Stroud.
