The subsequent comments from head coach Robert Saleh and general manager Joe Douglas tried to downplay concerns, emphasizing the added competition and the complementary nature of the new additions to the running back corps.
However, the repeated emphasis on the new acquisitions raises doubts about the Jets’ confidence in Israel Abanikanda, their existing running back. Despite earlier assurances of belief in Abanikanda, the decision to draft two more running backs suggests otherwise. Abanikanda’s limited playing time in his rookie season, attributed partly to pass protection issues, further underscores the uncertainty surrounding his future with the team.
The draft strategy under Joe Douglas, which includes a consistent focus on running backs, has raised eyebrows. With the addition of Allen and Davis, the Jets have addressed a physicality and pass protection gap in their running back room, which has been a longstanding concern.
