Robinson started his college football career at Maryland as a linebacker and then transferred to Penn State to focus on pass rushing. He earned a starting spot in his final year and declared for the NFL draft after his junior season.
Robinson’s first step is comparable to the top pass rushers in the NFL. His quickness off the snap often catches offensive tackles off guard, leading to many disruptive plays. At Penn State, coaches would position him widely to maximize his pass-rushing angle.
Despite his impressive athletic traits, Robinson’s lack of significant statistical production is concerning. Over three seasons, he managed only 43 tackles, 20 for loss, and 11.5 sacks. His total pressures were 87, but just 26 came in his final year as a starter.
The low production could deter teams, but for the Lions, Robinson’s elite physical traits are tempting. His raw potential and the opportunity to develop under the Lions’ coaching could make him the best pure pass rusher in this draft class.
Robinson brings a unique set of skills not currently present on the Lions roster, and his addition could allow the defensive coordinator to vary defensive tactics. Looking ahead, Robinson’s presence will help the team manage future contract renewals among their defensive ends.
