The New York Giants have voiced confidence in their starting quarterback, Daniel Jones. However, they haven’t ruled out the possibility of drafting a quarterback later this month.
Given that the top four quarterback prospects are expected to be taken before the Giants’ turn at No. 6, they may need to trade back into the first round to secure one of them. Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox suggests a trade scenario with the Kansas City Chiefs, who hold the 32nd pick:
Giants Receive: 2024 Round 1 Pick (No. 32), 2024 Round 4 Pick (No. 131)
Chiefs Receive: 2024 Round 2 Pick (No. 47), 2024 Round 3 Pick (No. 70)
This move makes sense as it would allow the Giants to target a quarterback while still addressing other needs, potentially by selecting a receiver at No. 6. However, trading up from their current position might require sacrificing a valuable pick in next year’s draft, a decision the general manager, Joe Schoen, should approach cautiously.
Opting to move back into the bottom of the first round could offer a more cost-effective solution. This would provide the Giants with the opportunity to secure quarterbacks like Bo Nix from Oregon or Spencer Rattler from South Carolina, with the added benefit of a five-year contract option for first-round picks.
Knox highlights the depth of talent in the 2024 draft class, making teams like the Chiefs, keen to capitalize on rookie contracts, potential trade partners.
While Knox’s proposed trade structure appears somewhat unrealistic, adjustments could be made to make it more feasible. For instance, offering the second-round pick (No. 47) along with a 2025 fourth-rounder may be more palatable for the Giants, especially considering their projected compensatory fourth-round selection next year.
By leveraging multiple picks, akin to their strategy in acquiring Brian Burns this year, the Giants could strike a balance between securing a quarterback and maintaining draft flexibility.
